Jun 27, 2008 That EW list

Beautifully articulated by Remi at 12:08 pm with 4 comments

The Ryouche challenged me to follow this meme, and I am always one to take on a good challenge. After the cut is EW’s top 100 “new classic” movies of the past 25 years. I’ve bolded the ones I’ve seen (70 of them) and commented on the ones where I have anything edifying to come up with. So suck it!

1. Pulp Fiction (1994) (Not my personal #1, but overall a fair selection.)

2. The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-03) (Now this is pulp fiction. The books are overrated tripe.)

3. Titanic (1997)
4. Blue Velvet (1986)
5. Toy Story (1995) (My least favorite Pixar movie other than Cars. The Incredibles would be a better selection.)

6. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
7. Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
8. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) (Yes, the acting is pretty awesome, but the cinematography is what makes this movie.)

9. Die Hard (1988)
10. Moulin Rouge (2001)
11. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
12. The Matrix (1999)

20. The Lion King (1994)
21. Schindler’s List (1993)

37. Pretty Woman (1990)
38. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
39. The Sixth Sense (1999)
40. Speed (1994) (Has Keanu Reeves really been in two classic movies over the past 25 years?)

44. The Player (1992)

56. The Lives of Others (2006)
57. There’s Something About Mary (1998)
58. Ghostbusters (1984)
59. L.A. Confidential (1997) (Actually this is Guy Pearce’s best work before Memento. And also his best work since Neighbours.)

69. All About My Mother (1999)
70. Broadcast News (1987)
71. Unforgiven (1992)
72. Thelma & Louise (1991)

74. Drugstore Cowboy (1989)
75. Out of Africa (1985)
76. The Departed (2006)
77. Sid and Nancy (1986)

79. Waiting for Guffman (1996) (I still prefer Best in Show.)

80. Michael Clayton (2007)
81. Moonstruck (1987)
82. Lost in Translation (2003) (Should be way, way higher. One of my favorites over the last few years.)

84. Sideways (2004)
85. The 40 Year-Old Virgin (2005)
86. Y Tu Mamá También (2002)
87. Swingers (1996) (Quite possibly the best movie made by anyone ever.)

88. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)
89. Breaking the Waves (1996)
90. Napoleon Dynamite (2004) (It’s funny and all, but is it really that good?)

91. Back to the Future (1985)
92. Menace II Society (1993)
93. Ed Wood (1994) (Pooooossibly my favorite Burton movie.)

94. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

96. Far From Heaven (2002)
97. Glory (1989)
98. The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
99. The Blair Witch Project (1999) (Vastly underrated after it got caught up in its own hype. I love this movie.)

100. South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut (1999)

Movies that should have been on the list, but weren’t:

Opera: Hugely underrated movie. The only shot to rival the first person raven perspective toward the end, is Argento’s own tracking shot in Tenebre.

Heathers: Christian Slater at his finest and Winona Ryder at her cutest.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: Any best-of list has to include an Indy movie.

Mulholland Dr.: Possibly Lynch’s finest movie.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Such a wonderfully surreal, absurd movie.

There are comments Post yours

I would have put “They Live,” “Big Trouble in Little China,” “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Dark Crystal,” “Wild at Heart,” “Being John Malkovich,” “The Science of Sleep,” “Eraserhead” …

“Pan’s Labyrinth,” definitely. “Eraserhead” is from ‘77 however.

I should probably register remiscommentsaremyblog.com, but anyway …

1. Pulp Fiction (1994) (You know, I’ve never sat and watched this straight through, but I’ve seen all the pieces. I don’t revere it as much as just about everyone I know.)
2. The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-03) (If you didn’t love this, you’re a remouche.)
3. Titanic (1997) (Once in a while I make a principled stand and completely avoid a cultural phenomenon. Like “Survivor,” and this movie.)
4. Blue Velvet (1986)
5. Toy Story (1995) (I do like The Incredibles more, but this deserves its ranking for helping mainstream animated films as entertainment for all ages.)
6. Saving Private Ryan (1998) (Not a war movie guy.)
7. Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) (Wait, maybe I have seen this one … is it about a roommate?)
8. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
9. Die Hard (1988)
10. Moulin Rouge (2001)

11. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) (Remember, St. Hubbins is the patron saint of quality footwear.)

17. Jerry Maguire (1996) (Again, a principled stand.)

36. Spider-Man 2 (2004)
37. Pretty Woman (1990)
38. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
39. The Sixth Sense (1999) (Liked “Signs” better. But not “The Crappening.”)
40. Speed (1994) (Or as Frank Costanza would call it, “The Bus.”)

41. Dazed and Confused (1993) (One-line answer for Remi: “That’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.” McConaughey’s finest hour.)
42. Clueless (1995)
43. Gladiator (2000)
44. The Player (1992) (Not sure why this one reminded me, but “Glengarry Glen Ross” should be on this list as well.)
45. Rain Man (1988)
46. Children of Men (2006) (Very solid, but I finished the movie wanting a bit more from it.)
47. Men in Black (1997)
48. Scarface (1983)
49. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

67. Donnie Brasco (1997)

78. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

81. Moonstruck (1987) (No “Pan’s Labyrinth” and no “Karate Kid,” but we get Cher?)
82. Lost in Translation (2003) (Should be way, way higher. One of my favorites over the last few years.)
83. Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (1987) (Like with “Pulp Fiction,” many of my friends revere this series but I just don’t get it. I like Bruce Campbell better in cameos and commercials.)
84. Sideways (2004)
85. The 40 Year-Old Virgin (2005) (Yeah I liked it and all, but really? Top 100?)
86. Y Tu Mamá También (2002)
