Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization

Some highlights:

This obsession with “street-cred” reaches its apex of absurdity as hipsters have recently and wholeheartedly adopted the fixed-gear bike as the only acceptable form of transportation – only to have brakes installed on a piece of machinery that is defined by its lack thereof.

Loosely associated with some form of creative output, they attend art parties, take lo-fi pictures with analog cameras, ride their bikes to night clubs and sweat it up at nouveau disco-coke parties.

Hipsterdom is the first “counterculture” to be born under the advertising industry’s microscope, leaving it open to constant manipulation but also forcing its participants to continually shift their interests and affiliations. Less a subculture, the hipster is a consumer group – using their capital to purchase empty authenticity and rebellion.

Speaking of which, whatever happened to the “yupster”? I loved that classification! Somebody with good taste in music and movies but who was way too lazy/tired/old/had better things to do to actually follow trends? There’s something noble about that.

Yes, I am quite noble. Thanks for noticing.

And I have never called you anything but!

Oh. Wow. The passages you quoted… You have a real mean streak Remi Olsen.

Your nobility is killing me, Remster. I live sweating it up at nouveau disco-coke parties. Adbusters is going down…no one makes a self-depricating metaphor out of brake installation on a fixed gear bike and then sum up what it means to be post-human.

Too bad, Paul, that as the hipster you are, you’re clearly too apathetic to do anything about this.
